The Russians have been unable to achieve significant gains in recent months, and Ukraine has been liberating more territory than the occupiers have gained. The pace of technological development on both sides is remarkable: Ukraine is leading in innovation and creativity, while Russia maintains an advantage in production scale. What will be the turning point?

Ukraine sees the integration of AI technologies as a potential game-changer and has signaled that it may soon surprise us with a new development.

Ukraine Bets on AI to Gain a Technological Edge

According to the head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov, the battlefield has entered a phase where existing technologies are reaching their limits, making innovation essential. He said that in military terms, Ukraine has reached a stage where simply increasing the number of drones no longer provides a decisive advantage. Both Ukraine and Russia have approached the limits of existing technologies. The next phase is the full integration of artificial intelligence.

“A transition to autonomous systems is required. These should be platforms capable of independently identifying targets and maneuvering without direct human control. Ukraine already has developments in this area, and they are expected to become a significant and potentially unexpected factor on the battlefield in the near future,” Budanov wrote on his social media.

Ukraine has already been integrating autonomous capabilities into all types of its unmanned systems - aerial, ground, and naval. AI development for unmanned systems in Ukraine has advanced in several directions — optical target recognition and acquisition, navigation algorithms, and swarm technologies.

  • Modern unmanned ground vehicles can navigate independently, conduct surveillance, and detect potential targets. However, the decision to open fire remains with a human operator. Military personnel in Ukraine stress that this human oversight is critical, as robotic systems may misidentify targets or mistakenly engage civilians.

  • In October 2025, SBU unveiled a new generation of Sea Baby unmanned surface vessels designed for special operations in the Black Sea. The platform was equipped with a gyrostabilized machine-gun mount featuring automatic target acquisition and recognition capabilities.

  • In January 2026, Ukraine launched the Brave1 Dataroom initiative in partnership with Palantir to train and test artificial intelligence models for interceptor drones using real-world battlefield data.

    If the project proceeds as planned, by mid-summer, Ukraine is expected to establish the framework for a nationwide system of autonomous air-defence interceptors. Read my report: Ukraine Collects Data for Its Interceptor Drones.

  • Recently, a joint venture between the Ukrainian company Airlogix and the German branch of the U.S.-based Auterion was announced, which has already secured an order to produce “thousands of heavy AI-enabled drones” for Ukraine. According to Defence Express, the key feature of these drones is the extensive use of AI algorithms to enable high levels of autonomy in navigation, target detection, and strike capabilities. This represents the core contribution of Auterion, which specializes in such solutions and integrates its proprietary hardware-software stack into the systems.

  • In April 2026, Ukraine’s MoD, with support from the UK government, established the “A1” artificial intelligence center. It is intended to become a unified hub bringing together the military, industry, researchers, and international partners around defence AI. Its focus includes AI for drones and robotic platforms capable of operating without GPS and in electronic warfare (EW) environments, as well as software solutions designed to integrate systems into a unified battlefield network.

Russian forces have also been experimenting with fully autonomous drones for some time. The first practical steps in this direction were observed in February 2025 with the use of the V2U drone, which has since been studied in considerable detail.

More recently, Ukraine’s military intelligence has confirmed the use of an AI-enabled drone in a strike on Kyiv. The system reportedly incorporated the same components as the V2U. The technology is not tied to a specific UAV model and can be integrated into other drone platforms.

Defence Express reported that the V2U used an off-the-shelf civilian modular solution—the NVIDIA Jetson Orin by NVIDIA, installed in the Leetop A603 manufactured in China. Combined with a large visual dataset and a high-quality camera, this enables the V2U to conduct autonomous flights, detect and engage targets, and support swarm operations through color-based identification on the fuselage.

Samuel Bendett reported that Putin called for the development of domestic AI solutions for national defence. Earlier, many Russian AI and high-tech developers lamented the cut off from Western AI models for R&D. Putin now wants strictly domestic solutions.

Ukrainian Drones in Germany: Frontline Robotics-Quantum Systems Joint Venture

In December 2025, German Quantum Systems and Ukrainian Frontline Robotics launched the first joint co-production of Ukrainian drones in Europe under the Build with Ukraine initiative. In February 2026, they unveiled their first jointly produced drone, and by spring, the first batch of Ukrainian drones manufactured at a German facility had already been delivered to Ukraine’s Defence Forces.
